Metallographic sandpaper is used every day in the metallographic laboratory. How much do you know about their grinding effect and how to select them?
Are you still using metallographic sandpaper that falls off easily and needs to be replaced after a few rounds of grinding, which is not durable and has poor grinding effect?
Today, the editor recommends a metallographic sandpaper made of silicon carbide as grinding particles from the United States
Compared to ordinary metallographic sandpaper on the market, it not only has good grinding performance, but also is very durable, odorless, environmentally friendly and safe.

It is made of waterproof C-grade weight paper and a special pressure sensitive adhesive backing. The silicon carbide grinding particles adhere firmly, are evenly and densely distributed, and have fast material removal rate and consistency. Sharp silicon carbide abrasive particles can quickly remove the deformation layer on the surface of the sample, providing a perfect metallographic grinding surface. At the same time, it is very environmentally friendly, and there is no odor during the grinding process. Due to the hard and wear-resistant nature of silicon carbide abrasive particles, as well as the excellent quality of the paper base and adhesive, sandpaper has excellent wear resistance, with an average service life far exceeding that of ordinary sandpaper. Under normal conditions of use, it is approximately 2-3 times longer than the lifespan of ordinary metallographic sandpaper.
As soon as the engineers in the metallographic laboratory received this metallographic sandpaper, they called out:; This sandpaper is easy to use, it can be ground well in one go& Rdquo;
Unlike ordinary metallographic sandpaper, silicon carbide metallographic sandpaper is a water-based sandpaper that only needs water for grinding, which is very convenient. Moreover, the grinding effect is good, and it can be completed in one pass, with high sample preparation efficiency.
Is there any difference between the surface of the sample ground with ordinary metallographic sandpaper and this metallographic sandpaper?

As shown in the above figure, under a microscope, the grinding surface of ordinary metallographic sandpaper does not have a clear three-dimensional morphology, and appears to be on a flat surface; The sandpaper grinding surface of QMAXIS in the United States has clearer grinding marks, overlapping with each other, presenting a three-dimensional morphology image. It can be seen that the grinding marks of the sample ground with ordinary sandpaper are flattened, and the depth of the deformation layer increases exponentially. In the next grinding process, the scratches are more difficult to remove. Not only does it increase the difficulty of sample preparation, but it also prolongs the sample grinding preparation time, resulting in relatively low efficiency.
The metallographic sandpaper imported from the United States is made of silicon carbide abrasive particles, which are evenly and densely distributed, ensuring that the surface damage of the sample is smaller and the depth of the abrasive marks is consistent. It is available from P60-P4000, with diameters ranging from 3 inches (73mm) to 8 inches (203mm) to 12 inches (305mm), and comes with or without adhesive to meet your different needs. The preparation plan can choose grinding steps based on different materials and preparation purposes, as well as which particle size of metallographic sandpaper is more suitable for each step.
