Introduction to the National College Student Metallographic Skills Competition

The National Undergraduate Metallographic Skills Competition aims to cultivate the innovative and practical spirit of undergraduate students, improve their practical abilities, promote teaching, reform, and learning through competitions, and continuously improve the quality of talent cultivation in the field of materials science. The competition was originally a college student competition jointly sponsored by Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Southeast University, Central South University, National University of Defense Technology and other universities. The first National Undergraduate Metallographic Skills Competition was held in University of Science and Technology Beijing in November 2012, and has been held annually since then. In August 2015, the Teaching Guidance Committee for Materials Majors in Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education officially issued a document as the organizer of the competition to provide specific guidance on the organization of the competition. So far, five sessions have been held, and the number of participating universities and teachers and students has been increasing year by year. The fifth competition organized by Tsinghua University in July 2016 was attended by 396 undergraduate students and more than 350 guidance teachers from 133 universities across the country. Students majoring in Materials Science and Engineering from our school of science participated for the first time and won one second prize, one third prize, and one top prize.
